Answers:    Autometer makes a calibrate speedo, it's electronic,so no gears.
An electronic pick up( counter ) is placed such that it counts sprocket or pully teeth.
The unit is put into a programing mode, you ride 2 miles, exit program and the processor know how many pass of teeth equal how many mph.
