Do you really need a birth certificate to get your Driver's License?

Question:
I just moved to the state of California. When I went to the DMV the lady told me I need my birth certificate. My parents have it in storage, and getting a copy would take awhile because my birthplace is overseas. Can I use anything else to show proof of birth?

Answers:
Here's a link to the California DMV. Even if you CAN use something other than your birth certificate to get your license, you really should arrange to get it one way or another.

Most states have alternate forms of ID that they will accept. Check the Cal DMV's website to see what they allow. Sadly, since you're young you probably don't have other forms of ID than a birth certificate and a social security card.
