What number contained by the tire size is the tread length of the tire?

Please give me some examples of tire sizes and what those sizes niggardly becuase me and my girlfreind are arguing about what the 50, 60 and 70's tires are!

Answers:    The 50, 60, or 70 are sidewall sizes.

The 1st 3 numbers are the girth of the tire at it's widest point.

Example

P205/55R16

With
P=Tire for a passenger car
205= Width of tire
55=% contained by MM of the 1st 3 #'s of which is what the size of the sidewall is.
R16= Tire size and also max wheel size.

There is also other things on it including

Treadwear ratings
and other ratings such as the max speed that the tire can feel.
the first set, usually 3 numbers long, ex. 235/75-16 would be 235 mm wide x 75 mm sidewall point x 16" rim
