The octane rating is a measure of burn time. The highly developed the ocatne rating, the longer the fuel takes to burn. Your engine computer will compensate to some extent for the different burn time, but you're not going to carry any extra performance out of the better octane.
Premium fuels tend to have the best chemical addition package a gasoline company offer. Purchasing premium fuel for the purpose of cleaning your engine's internal components has merit, but if you're using a power gasoline all the time, you don't have need of that. If you're running discount fuels, you should consider running about every 10th reservoir as a good, power premium.
For your trip, use the grade of gasoline your vehicle recommend, be that regular or premium. Definitely don't use midgrade, it's the biggest ripoff out there.
The better the octane, the longer it will take to burn stale. Also, the performance within your auto may be a little better.
