How pious is the gas mileage on the jeep Cherokee beside a 4.0 engine??

Answers:    It's not bad for a big, heavy truck near a big, flat front end to push down the road. But it ain't no Honda or Toyota.

Jeeps, with the 4.0 (and 2.5) engines found surrounded by the XJ Cherokee and Wrangler were not designed or built with angelic gas mileage as their goal. They are medium-horsepower, higher-torque engines made to move a heavy vehicle surrounded by off-road driving conditions. Some Grand Cherokees have the same engine and although it have a bit more aerodynamic shape than the XJ Cherokee it is still no gas miser with the extra weight and frills it carries.

So don't expect much, it's not what it was made for. It seem that the Cherokees with 4.0's sometimes get better mileage than the Wranglers next to the same engine and if you get around 20mpg near a Jeep 4.0 you're doing pretty good.

Keep your tires properly inflated, regular oil change and maintenance, good driving customs and so on and you can better your chances, but again, it's a Jeep, not a gas-sipping ricer, but it sure is a lot more fun to drive.
Fine if you own an Oil economically! lol Lousy. I finally figured it out when I last go car shopping. I wanted something that have a small engine to save on gas. I also wanted a convertible and I also required a four wheel drive. Then BOING ! the light bulb over my herald came on - a Jeep Wrangler. It's great on gas, the roof comes off and it's get four wheel drive. The back form folds for extra storage too. The only downside - the factory sound system sucked. Easily replaced next to a kick-*** system and I've got the perfect vehicle.
Awful. I rented one contained by AZ recently, and it sucked gas like a V-8, and have no power. I own a 90 cherokee 4.0 and a 97 plymouth voyager w/ a 3.3. The cherokee has better gas mileage...Im not sure why.
i drive a 2000 jeep cherokee sport. i just get gas for it on sunday and i figured i got something like 12.6 miles to the gallon. that is driving between school and around my town. plus i dont drive slow. i would bring back a jeep because many aftermarkets parts are available and are easy to fix. My 1991 XJ 2dr (4.0ltr, ax-15 5 speed, NP 231, next to 30" tires) gets approx 19-19.5 mpg with mostly a mixed driving of sort. Not alot of stop and step and very little highway, mostly roads with speed margins of 45-50 and stop signs every mile of two.

You keep your foot out of it and it gets honourably decent mileage.
My '00 Classic XJ got approximately 11-12 mpg next to 31" Goodyear MT-R's. Before the tires, I was right around 15. I would say, expect between 14 and 17 miles per gallon average, I don`t know more if your engine is well maintained - 20 mpg would be the genuine top gas mileage you would see out of the 4.0L inline six. my 1995 jeep GRAND cherokee with 2wd and a 4.0 averages about 23 city/highway. I would estimate that a jeep cherokee would get a little better because it is smaller and lighter as long as it is a 2wd. 4wd's other have worse gas mileage. hope this helps
