8 spigot gti starter removal?

i have a 1992 gti 8 spigot automatic and i have the starter bad the engine but it wont drop out past the axel what do i do!

A What? I had no impression there be such a thing. You right to be heard the starter is on the back of the engine instead of the front beside the motor mounts. Wickedly weird.

Take the wheel stale and pull it out the reins well if jacking it up doesn't work.
