Answers: you might find that much on it,some of them will get above 12,some hold been certain to average around 15 total,that isn't bad for a 454 though,correct luck on it.
Hey, I am a woman and you are being sexist. My first vehicle be a solid black 78 Monte Carlo with a 454, sunroof, tilt rudder, swivel seats and console. I loved that motor. It would FLY!! I think I get around 15 mpg best I can remember. Don't think we can't wallow in a rod just approaching the next "guy".
So what's your grill? I think your mileage may alter, and you probably will be lucky to see 10 MPG running without the trailer. That's why I bought the Duramax diesel surrounded by my GMC 3500 dualie 4x4. I'm getting 16 MPG without a trailer, and 12 MPG towing a 38' fifth-wheel.
The newer 454's that come out ? (can't recall exact year) own the newer heads (Vortec) and this have made a huge difference on the miles per gallon and torque/horsepower.
Many old timers bring to mind the day when towing near big block they could not run the speed limit (70MPH) minus the temp gauge running too hot so they would set the cruise at 60 MPH or smaller quantity. When GM slapped the newer heads on the 454's they can run hoighway speeds towing a house and not run hot.
I regard you can do 15 MPG if you stick to the speed limit and try running some 10W30 pure synthetic grease as this will give you an extra 5 HP and aid you squeeze every MPG you can out of a gallon of gas.
Don't forget to service the tranny and the differential amd U-joints. Nothing like fresh oil/fluids adjectives through the drivetrain. Makes things smooth, quiet, and nifty.

Yeah the figures are right but the ratio of the gears is any cruising or pulling--so lower will use more gas--higher will cruise at low RPM. Hey just treat it well brought-up and drive it nice. Sludge will be a problem--get the engine flushed and new gaskets--worth the cost.
