A few nights ago, I be coming off of the highway, and I notice a rattling nouns from under the hood- close to a belt popped. before I know it, the engine shut down and my braking system was bad as well- i had to use the emergency brake to stop it. The steering system go out as well. The battery-operated still supplies power to the radio and the headlighs, and it charged my cell phone as well, but the engine wont turn on. When I put the switch into the ignition and try to start, it justs makes a brief "sneezing" nouns.I have to enjoy it towed tomorrow, but I was purely looking for some insight before I did. What is wrong near my car? I own a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, 103,000 miles.
Answers: 103k is not real miles for a 2001... Call me when it hits 150k within 6 years or so (like most of my customers)
Without seeing it, I can't help you... I don't presume it's a alternator or starter issue if the headlights are still glowing bright.
I've see some where the crank pulley comes past its sell-by date and slips the belt and will do exactly what you describe but without looking at it, I won't know for sure (I'm guessing) ..or something else cause the engine to lock up or stop (you have be maintaining it similar to the book says every 5,000 mile grease changes or smaller quantity I hope)...
The battery cable story is also something to look at, however we usually see this issue more upon starting the vehicle than goign down the highway.
limp battery/loose cable, or alternator,,,you should of listened to ck engine lite.
