1986 Honda accord LX heating issue.?

Question:
, 2 barrel carburettor engine, when are the two cooling fans in front of the radiator supposed to kick on? I let the car idle for a while, and even after the temperature gauge goes past half, the fans still don't kick on. I have been told by numerous mechanics that when the A/C is running, at least one of the fans should be running. So, my question is, does the car have to be in gear for the fans to engage? And what could cause them to NOT turn on?? And to all of you, Yes, the fuses are brand new. PLEASE HELP. P.S. there are NO aftermarket modifications, the only strange thing, is thta in the glove box, there are 2 switches, on that is like a toggle switch, andon that is a red push, but neither of them engage the fans, so, what to do?

Answer:
one fan should come on when the air conditioning is turned on. If it does not, the fan motor is probably siezed or burnt out.

the other fan works off of a temperature switch on the engine. That switch only controls the fan and is not tied in with the temperature gauge or anything else.

there is a fan relay that could be the problem, but usually the fan will not shut off when the relay goes bad and your problems are the opposite.

my recommendation would be to use a test light to check for power at each of the fan motors when the engine is running at idle and the temperature is up to normal operating temp. Turn the air conditioning on and test for power (the test light should light up) at both motors since we don't remember which one is the a/c fan. If the light does light up on one of the motors then that motor is bad. If you don't get the test light to light up, there is a problem on the power side through the relay or fuse.

you can also test for power out of the temperature switch; if there is power out of the temp sender then the switch is enabeing the motor. test at the motor and if you have power there, the motor is bad. if you don't have power out of the switch, the temp switch is bad.

I have a feeling that you have two bad fan motors.

no the engine does not need to be in gear for the fans to engage they should do automatically after the vehicles engine reaches a center point, more then likely it's a bad sensor or relay so where, not sure take it to a mech and have them look at it, Honda's run hot to begin with so you don't want to burn on the motor

It could be a temp. sending unit, bad fan relay, or even a bad fan motor. I would get it looked at to find out what going on if the car runs to hot to many times then you can overheat the engine and cause a blown headgasket.
