I dont see what your previous answe is sayin on doign it legally, its no law on the engine size etc.. nothing to do with year models car etc.. it just has to have the proper exhaust etc.. catylic converter, etc.. in order to pass smog test, The engine will defintley fit under the hood, the motor support brackets will be different . the rest shouldnt be a problem not sure if the 2 models have different transmissions or not on rather it will bolt up to the tranny, good luck but yes a good welder/cutting torch can modify the motor supports, just check on the tranny. Not legally. The engine has to be same year or newer as the car it's going into. If you ever move to a smog state, or if your state adopts smog rules (like Texas is doing), they'll make you put a legal engine in it, or scrap the car.
If you really want to do that, get a wrecked 2000 Sunfire with a good engine, and swap engine+tranny (don't even unbolt them from each other) and everything engine related - smog controls, cats, harnesses, evap, fuel pump & tank*, the works. This is a lot of work, but it's fairly straightforward if you're meticulous. And it'll run right, be reliable and pass smog. You'll need the factory shop manual and a scan tool.
* V6 fuel pumps are bigger, usually, and they're in the tank, so just swap the whole tank.
There are no v6 or inline 4 motors they are called engines. Why you would want to replace a newer engine for a smaller one is beyond me. Yes, I see you want a more powerful engine, but cmon' now do it right. That's like taking a fresh red apple and replacing it with a rotting green one.
No. The smog requirements are different, you have to meet the smog requirements for which ever is newer the engine or the chassis. The Sunfire never had a six so the chassis is both too small and not rigid enough to take the extra torque for long. A turbocharger or nitrous might be a better way to go.
