The Diesel interpretation (TDI) is the world's best car. My '03 Jetta articulated vehicle now have 139,000 trouble-free miles on it and still averages 48 mpg (5-speed) and has every luxury alternative (leather seats, sunroof, power everything, etc.) No disadvantages vs. gas.
I hold no problems with my 1987 gasoline Jetta. It consistantly get 28-32 mpg even with the a/c on and doing city driving.
I should mention that its get a 1.8 non-turbo engine and a three speed automatic transmission as all right.
They are very reliable. MPG: 25-30. Lasted 187,000 miles. Drove consistently surrounded by snow and cold from 1988 to 2004.
Here's what it took to finally kill my Jetta: permit the brakes get so bleak it was metal on metal, stereo be ripped out/stolen which disconnected all the dashboard lights/broke the heater/AC, hood latch get broken when I forgot to lock it and it flew up and bent backwards over the roof, previous owner jammed the back door so it wouldn't begin, backup lights disconnected (see above), e brake got pulled apart, dinged and scratched adjectives over with lower than carriage rust but the -18 degree F for nearly 5 days took its toll.
That's a die-hard vehicle. What a difference one good owner would own made!
great car, my daughter have a tdi jetta wagon, around 50mpg, she also tows a small camper trailor next to it. Hers is a standard loaded with adjectives except leather.
I LOVE my Jetta. It gets around 26 miles per gallon and it's intensely reliable.
