Answers: I believe it was Continentals that be installed on German made vehicles at that time. I started near VW (at the dealership service department in 1980), but come across to remember that Continentals were on almost everything VW have for several years before and after 1980.
It wasn't till VW be made in USA, that other brands of tryes be used, I think Goodyears/Michelins be used most often on the American built Rabbits, next to a few Firestones.
Even today, Continentals are still being used on German built VW's, although, Michelin and some other brands are also used depending upon vehicle application.
