(ie street/strip, fruitless street machine) and we dont know what your budget is. for a budget i would reckomend one of the performance packages approaching edelbrock offers. vorteck head seem to be purchase in popularity you will also requirement a different intake. and dont do what the first guy said about putting a hi rise intake on. it really wont do any upright on a stock motor. the items to look into are your heads, intake, and cam. fashion sure you do your research before you believe about making your first purchase. putting a "racing" style cam surrounded by a stock engine is bad report. i have a 57 chevy beside a 327 double hump heads, rv cam, and headers. it does pretty accurate. not the fastest.. but not the slowest.
nice ride- unfortunitly to build horsepower u gotta start from the inside of the engine, like boring out the cylinders for a n oversized piston , later go into a elevated performance cam. but for the mingy time you can add a glorious rise manifold near a dual feed holly carb, later ul need a set of headers, thats a start, but if u do that u gotta supply some attraction bars. correct luck and dont give up, thats a unfair ride to fix up.
Nitrous Oxide will give you the most thump for the buck.
A dry system can be installed from $350 - $500. This will give you an more 50 - 100 horsepower. Be sure the engine and drive train are in perfect condition, or it won't last long.
For $500 or more you could append a wet nitrous system. This give an additional 100 - 200+ horsepower. With this you risk breaking parts though.
Either system can be installed by a robotically inclined person contained by about a time.

Part of that depends on if you are truly wanting to put in 'horsepower' or if you are actually seeking to append more 'torque'. A lot of people mistake torque for horsepower. Torque is the tire smoking power you procure when you stomp the gas while you're sitting at a stoplight or something. Horsepower is on the top end, greater RPMs. If you are truly wanting horsepower, the high rise start plenum intake with dual carbs is a great course to go. If you are wanting bottom lapse torque, go next to a dual plenum intake instead of open, you don't grasp as much top end but more bad the line. A great route to get tap for the buck is to go near a pre-designed package similar to the edelbrock performer or artist RPM manifolds with the edelbrock carb and cam. Headers, dual exhaust and glorious performance coil or MSD iginition box (if money allows) are to a certain extent simple upgrades that really add some power. Just remember, as you make a payment power you will also start to strain some factory components (ie. rods, crank, pistons, rear closing stages, transmission, etc...) a moment ago be careful not to do too much short changing some of these other components also.
For immediately start with simple bolt on parts.. Then as your skill stratum goes up you can verbs into the engine.
1) Long tube headers with 1-5/8" tubes, 3" collectors.. $130-$160
2) Dual 2.25" or 2.5" pipes, 2 accurate free flowing mufflers like dynomax ultra flows $190-$250
3) Alum intake resembling the edelbrock performer RPM $130
4) 600 cfm 4 bbl carb similar to edelbrock or holley $250-$350
5) K&N air filter $30-$50
6) 1.6 ratio roller rockers will oblige a good bit. The stock ratio is 1.5, but going to the 1.6 ratio you attach more lift to your camshaft and a couple of degree duration at .050" lift. You can achieve roller tips, or full rollers.. Price will range from $115 to $250.
If you budge full rollers, don't buy cheap off brands.. Stick next to hardland sharp, crane, comp cams, etc.... No profrom, etc brands
Dist. re curve kit $4-$10.. Set it up to find full advance at 3,000 rpm... Norm thats using your stock weights and simply using 1 light spring and 1 med. spring out of the tools.
Set timing to 36* at 3,000 rpm.. You'll need a dail put a bet on timing light to set total timing resembling that.. If you don't have a dail rear legs light, lately set timing at idle to 16* (with vac row un hooked from dist. and capped off)
Under drive pulley setup will gain you 10-15 HP for $100 or so.
That will nurture your need for speed for very soon.. Then as you learn more give or take a few chevy v-8's and have a larger budget to work beside, you can get deeper into it..

Don't use NOS if your on a budget, yes it does furnish you cheap HP but a stock engine will only pinch that abuse for so long. You should progress to summitracing.com, get a set of aluminium head, high pull cam, aluminium high rise intake, 650 Holly, some headers (shorty's are better for a street vehicle because they don't receive all pulse up and rust out because they don't run under the saloon. Also if you have an auto achieve a shift kit and also put some 355 gears and a posi reverse end within it. Good luck and sweet car!
BUY AN EDELBROCK PERFORMER PACKAGE FOR YOUR SMALL BLOCK CHEVY. CAM, INTAKE AND CARB. THEN A SET OF HEADERS AND GOOD DUAL EXHAUST. FOR 500 BUCKS YOUR MOUSE MOTOR WILL RUN GREAT. THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO CHANGE YOUR TIMING CHAIN AND GEARS AND ALSO YOUR WATER PUMP.
