Answers: There are a lot of compromises that could be made- approaching do you want it just for vehicle navigation, or do you want it to be portable for hiking or other off-road adventures, etc...
I really close to the Garmin Nuvi units. It's portable when you want to bearing around a city, but it's geared towards street navigation. They even have a built contained by map, with a total database of places of interest. You can also add your own places of interest.
If you are looking for something even more sports car oriented, you could sheck out the Garmin Street Pilot series- no freestyle power, but a bigger screen.
If you want to also hold a hand-held unit for outdoor use, the Garmin GPSMap 60 or GPSMap 76 unit are great.
If you notice the Garmin trend, it's because I guide a GPS workshop at a local community college, and I've found all of the Garmins to hold the best user interface.
