I really would like to be a pilot in a few years. How much training and hours do you need in rough to be a 747 pilot on NWA, United Airlines, etc?
Answer:
TRAINING?
You need your PPL, commercial & ATP certificates with multi-engine & instrument ratings. This will generally take 2-4 years to complete and upwards of $45,000. Some pay as much as $100K depending on if they also went to an aviation university.
HOURS?
Many thousands of hours of flight experience at the regionals, charter or in the military to even be considered by UAL or NWAs hiring boards. At least 5,000+ currently to be hired as a narrowbody first officer (co-pilot).
Once at a major, becoming a captain isn't dependant on flight experience but tenure or "seniority" with the airline. A First Officer can move up to captain only when there is a vacancy and those are filled starting with the most senior.
747 captains generally have well over 20 years tenure with their airline. It is a very senior position that takes a long time to move into as vacancies only occur when a pilot above leaves or the company gets more airplanes.

Very difficult to get civilian training that would translate to commercial airline hours. They wouldn't take small plane flight hours. Best way is to fly planes in the military to get experience they are looking for
Well, first you need your private pilots license (around $6,000 and 40-60 hours), then you need your instrument rating (around $7,000 and another 60 hours), then you need your multi-engine rating (around $3,000 and a couple hours depending on how well you do), then you need to somehow build time. A LOT of time (5,000 hours, probably more) before a major airline like you mentioned are even going to look at you. You could either become a Flight instructor and build time that way, or fly charter or regional (if you have enough hours 500-1500). You would also want a college degree in something... you can go to Embry Riddle to learn everything there is to know and become a pilot that way (but it will cost you around $60,000 a year for everything). Or you can join the military and learn how to fly there (but pilot slots are very limited).
Your best bet is to just start flying at a local airport, or go to a school with a fligt program. to become a captain of a 747 though, it will probably take you your whole career.
You can be a 747 cruise pilot for Cathay Pacific airlines with a Commercial License, a Multi IFR rating, and your IATRA exam, with 250 hours total time. That should take about a year.
You will be a cruise pilot for a very long time (no takeoffs, approaches, or landings) and the working conditions suck (long hours, living in Hong Kong, big brother (CP) knowing when you check your email and asking you to go on another trip). But at least you will have early seniority.
After training and getting and pilot's license then passenger endorsement, etc.
Apply for job with an Airline, then follows building Seniority for a promotion to the right hand seat of a 747 additional training follows before promotion to the Left seat.
Military is really the best way to go if that is even an option for you...and they will take people with slightly less than perfect vision and people who have had certain types of laser eye surgery. Look into an Air Force ROTC scholarship if you are interested. You can try out ROTC for a whole year before committing to ANYTHING. And if you are on scholarship you go to school for free instead of paying $60,000+ to learn how to fly a single engine tin can around.
