Answers: An alt. is not going to keep your truck from starting, it charges the mobile after its started and running, so that's out. there are lots of possibilities though. Is there gas getting to the engine. No clogged lines or filter. If you turn the switch to the run position, (don't crank the engine) you should hear the fuel pump switch on. It's a small electric hum. If you can't hear this by the gas tank that's where I'd start. There are also fuses and relays that could hang on to the engine from turning over. Most dangerous option, if the timing belt broke the engine will crank, but won't run. I don't know what engine you own so you may have a timing chain. belts break, chains usually don't. but if the engine that you own, has a timing belt and it has broke, if you own what is called an interference engine, you destroyed the valves contained by the cylinder head. A head post is $$$$$. I hope this gives you some help. Good luck.
electrical problem. alternator or ignition, is it slow to turn over or does it turn over fine but a short time ago wont start, maybe a loose coil or coil wire? check the electrical nouns to the coil, do teh lights come one, if they do are they bright or dim or do they flicker a bit? One answer is "spark and fuel". You need them both. So you can test for fuel and spark as below. However, a best guess may be a doomed to failure ignition module especially if it's a Ford Thick Film Ignition (TFI) module on the side of your distributor. Your car may be too new to hold one though.

it could be your computer (I know that sounds odd) but the ranger have an internal computer and when it goes the truck will turn over but not start. You can check with a mechanic or the booklet should be available at your local library crank senser
