Connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal. Keep the battery off of the floor and wait, wait and wait. Make sure there are no liquids seeping from the battery. IF you have the kind where you add electrolyte to the battery, use only distilled water. If the battery is the maintainance free kind and is 4 or more years old. You should replace it.
If the battery is installed in a car, disconnect the battery cables from the battery first. Then connect the red positive battery charger alligator clamp to the positive terminal of the battery. You may have to buy external battery posts that screw into a battery that uses the recessed terminal type connections if there's no external battery post to clamp to. Then hook up the black negative battery charger alligator clamp to the negative battery post. Set the battery charger for a 10 Amps or less charging rate and charge for 4 hours or so. A "trickle charger" will need to charge the battery overnight. Wear safety glasses because battery gases are explosive and many people have been injured by exploding batteries.
Always fill the battery wells properly with distilled water. Even maintenance free battery caps can sometimes be popped off to top off the electrolyte with distilled water after the battery is a couple years old. On your next battery purchase, consider buying the battery type below which positively never requires water to be added.
