Answers: i see a lot of answers sloping toward lifter resonance and it could well be. however, its be my experience that a lifter will whack at any temp and not lately at a cooler reading. another thought is a piston has worn some near the high mileage. a worn piston will clatter when cold, and the colder the louder but quieten as the engine warms and the piston heat and expands. this would also be normal wear and may not be grounds for alarm just nonetheless. strange knocks are the engines passageway of letting you know they are aging out on the job so sooner or then, replacement will be necessary, any the car or at lowest an engine. as far as changing to heavier cargo oils... not a polite idea. research the manufacturer specs for the temperate zone surrounded by which you live and go no heavier than their recommendation. even a 10 yr old saloon will start quickly and rev up on startup so you involve an oil shrill enough to pick up and be circulated vigorously so as to avoid futher damage during a "dry" start. my suggestion is to be aware that trading time is close by so be looking before you are gone stranded and forced to get anything is quickly inside reach. worthy luck and hope i've been of abet.
