I was thinking an RV Cam? Do I need to special order one to my needs? I want alot of torque out of my blazer, what should I do?
Answer:
I am assuming that your truck is 4 wheel drive right?? Well the best way for more torque i think is a gear swap. You probably have a 12 bolt rearend with 3.08 or 3.27 gears in it.Get rid of those things and put a good set of 3.73 or 4.11's in it.This will also have to be done to the front end to match because you cant run 2 different gear ratios in the front a rear of a 4x4. This also assuming that your truck is NOT full time 4 wheel drive and your have a part-time transfer case.I wouldnt go ripping into that motor just for a simple cam swap if the motor has lots of miles on it.The gear swap is expensive.Probably lookin a $1000 or more if you have someone do it but if your wanting more torque and your engine is old, this is the best way because there is no sense in puttin a towing cam in a motor with a crap load of miles on it unless you plan on rebuilding the whole engine.
check out summitracing.com, they'll work with you to get you what you want. yeah, a new cam would do the trick. if you've got the money get a new intake manifold aswell, a new exhaust system would also improve low-end to mid-range torque.
Best and cheapest usually don't go hand in hand. I'll first assume engine is in good shape and tuned stock. An RV cam would help, a cheaper solution might be to advance the cam about 4 degrees with an adjustable timing gear. You could add power by using 1.6:1 rocker arms as well. If it doesn't knock you can try advancing the ignition timing until it starts to ping/gives best power, whichever comes first. A good exhaust, with long tube or Thorley Tri Y heads and duals, or properly set up single can boost low end power. If you want to go exteme you can pull heads and shave for compression, run somender singh's grooves along with powrehaus.com's mods including their new powre valvz which boost low end torque like nothing I've ever seen (short of a blower or NOS).
the cheapest way to get more torque is to put a spacer in between the carb and intake.....changing intake and cam will result in most increase in torque
