I have a 99 v6, 3.8 mustang, no mods.. do i have 2 converters or just one?
i was told that i have a y-pipe, running into one exhaust. i havent' looked, to see yet, does anyone know if i have 2 converters? i probably wouldn' t know what to look for anyway.. was wondering cause i want to put flowmasters on.. thank you
Answers:
You have TWO converters. My understanding is that the V8 dual exhaust system is a direct bolt in.
Six cylinder pony, one pipe and converter. Just walk around to the back of your car and look down -- you will have one exhaust pipe if no modifications have been made. You can use one flowmaster muffler if you like.just gives it a little more of an exhaust note.
Uh . . . if you are going to do that job yourself, you will have to get under the car anyway. However, if you don't know what a catalytic converter looks like, you really need a mechanic to do the job safely.. An exhaust leak can kill you.
converters look like little mini mufflers in the exhaust pipes in front of the mufflers closer to the engine than a muffler and are usually made of stainless steel. They cost quite a bit to make so they likely only put one in right after your exhaust pipes join. If they put 2 they will be almost side by side before your exhaust pipes(the Y shaped bit) join together.
You have only one cat. The catylitic converter is in between the Y-pipe and the muffler. It's about 3-5in. around. The only thing that a Y-pipe is is a forked pipe that joins both sides of the engine's exhaust manifolds and puts it into one tube. One pipe, one catylitic converter. btw if you want to save some cash, get magnaflow. It's the same company, same muffler, and the same sound. The only difference is your buying a name. hope this info helps, and saves time and money
You have two.
i see their are alot of mixed answers, so i will tell you how to find out, first pop the hood and locate your exhaust pipe coming from the engine, you probably can see it better from either side. it should look all rusted, you will see the same on both sides off the engine, now just follow them down to where they meet together(the y) if you run in to something that looks like the the pipe has a swell spot in it, like the pipe has a bigger spot and then it returns to the same size, that is you coverter if you see one on each side then you have two but if you do not see it until after you pass the y then you have just one, the coverter is always closer to the engine and the muffler is usual closer to the end or where the exhaust exits the pipe
