i have a 1997 chevy camaro. the service engine soon light comes on and stays on for a month or so,then off, ?

Question:it will run perfect for months and then the light comes on and no one so far knows what is doing it. i have spent 600. or more in garages that knew nothing about it. can anyone help. one says it is the converter stopping up. another said it was the fuel injector going bad. the last one that cost me 600. said it was the ignition module, so i hed it replaced for 150. and new plug wires, new plugs the wors. it is worse now then when they said they could fix it

I LOVE THESE PEOPLE MAYBE IT'S A SENSOR THEY SAY! THERES MORE THEN 40 DIFFERENT SENSORS IN THIS CAR! WHICH ONE IS IT GUYS. YOU NEED A NEW MECHANIC BUDDY, YOU NEED A NEW MECHANIC THAT HAS A REAL SCANNER LIKE THE SNAP-ON MODIS, OR ANY OTHER SNAP-ON SCANNER NOT THE $50.00 PEACE OF S$IT FROM CAR QUEST, YOU NEED TO DO THIS WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, THE MECHANIC WILL THEN READ THE CODES OFF OF YOUR CARS COMPUTER HE SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ERASE THIS CODE.THAT IS A STUPID IDEA (ERASE IT AND IT WILL GO AWAY) THAT CODE SHOULD THEN BE LOOKED UP IN HIS SCANNER TROUBLE SHOOTER, OR HIS ALLDATA, OR MITCHELL ON DEMAND. IF YOU WALK INTO A SHOP THAT HAS NO TECHNOLOGY OR HAS BEEN WORKING ON CARS FOR 20 YEARS AND HASN'T UPDATED HIS EQUIPMENT YOUR WASTING YOUR TIME. GO TO SOMEONE THAT HAS CHANGED WITH THE TIMES.

MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL FILTER YOU CAN TAKE IT TO AUTOZONE....THEY WILL RESET IT FOR FREE.

nah...the fuel filter would make it cut out on you....ask ron annini the "car doctor" on the web...he will know bro.! might be an oxygen sensor or if its not just have the light reset if its running fine take it to the dealership & get them to run diagnostics on it. it will tell them exactly what is wrong w/ it. it may be expensive, or they may just need to reset the computer. u may have a sensor out. I dunno.

It could be sensor related, are you starting to get horrible gas mileage and engine performance is horrible? It could be as simple as those oxygen sensors. Those are a key point of communication in your car.

Quit dealing with small garages. Go to the dealership. It may cost a little more, but only once. arabian prince is right. get is scanned b/4 you do anything else. don't take it to a dealer, they charge too much. you didn't say if the car has problems once the check engine light has come on. get is scanned ASAP. there is a code set in the computer. good luck
