Car not accelerate... could this be the clutch?

Hi all,
my wife have an old 1.4 Golf (1994). Recently its starting doing something grotesque. In some gears as she accelerates the sports car doesnt actually move any faster, the number of revs go up and the engine is working harder, but its almost as if she has the clutch pressed.

Does this nouns like the clutch have gone, or something else?

How much should I expect to pay including grind to have a hot one fitted?

Answers:    sounds like clutch slip to me which medium it aint long before it stops working altogether. Best bring it changed sooner rather than then. Probs cost between lb200 - lb500 to fix depending on labour costs.
sounds similar to it is slipping. could be an adjustment or cable but more likely the clutch itself. between 200 and 400 quid i would speak.
