Just whatis the live expectance, (milage) of a cat. I"m quiet particular its clogged up, e.a. sound, concert, exhaust smell and of curse age, but just out of couriosety, how long do those things on average ending? I'm talking nearly a GM 262 ci V6 with 280 K miles on it (91 year model)

Answers: The time of a conveter is suposed to be the life of the vehicle or truck, however if the air-fuel mixture is off or running to rich, the cat, will try to burn the the unburned hydro-carbons or crude fuel and will overheat and burn itself up, I have see a cat get red hot close to a burner on an electric stove, at that time, the cat was toast.
Some progress out as soon as 100K miles, but at 280K it is clogged and bad.... replace it.... even at 100K I would replace the cat, so yours is far overdue to be replaced.
