Answers: I think you want to consult a transmission specialist; I have a similar problem 10 years ago on my Granada 2.9. Mine just wouldn't jump into 4th gear at all. I don't own the full details of the fault (the saloon was below extended warranty still) but I do know it was a breakdown of the solenoid which engages and keep fourth gear connected. You should look for a good auto trans fitter. A Ford service middle will probably sort it for you but their labour rates are pretty high. A point of interest; I've have my Granada Wagon for 15 years, it's done 164,000 miles (about 140,000 since the 4th gear repair) about 20,000 of which be pulling a heavy caravan. It burns almost no grease between services (12000 mile intervals) and on long runs will do about 25/27 mpg cruising at 75/80 mph. I mention that because of a couple of comments made by other would-be helper. Good luck.
Lol haven't seen a Grenada (Grenade as we used to hail as them) for a long time. I would check the fluid level and if it's full, you might call for to get the tranny rebuild.
