How can you let somebody know if an engine is pinging?

I have hear that you should use a higher octane rating within your gas if your engine produces pinging noises. What does this nouns like? Is it apparent and loud, dull and soft, etc.? Or is the case that sometimes you won't even know in the region of it until the engine is damaged?

Answers:    You will hear a boom like marbles surrounded by a glass jar in the main when you acellerate between 1500 and 2500 rpm. This noise is cause by very elevated internal cylinder temperatures.most adjectives cause is an egr problem or a highly lean fuel mixture-if you continue to drive next to it pinging you may melt holes surrounded by your pistons,ect.. the egr valve's job is to cool the combustion chamber. what you are hearing is the fuel mixture person ignited by steam instead of the spark plugs. also note that a lean(not satisfactory fuel) mixture burns hotter than a rich(more fuel in mixture) mixture-if you hold this problem, get it checked out right away-bad for your engine-----good luck
a frothy ping will be hard to hear near the radio on, turn it off and approachable a window to listen

a discouraging ping will be noticeable, and will turn the CE table lamp on

higher octane will sometimes build a light ping step away
it sounds more like a metal rattle when you hit the gas. usually when going up hill or pulling a nouns.
