If I do not replace the timing belt, what will develop?

If I do not replace the timing belt, what will happen? Do you own experiece for it? I just bought a 1998 civic, 84K mi. The cost is $5000. Mechanic suggested me to replace the timing belt. It will cost me $500. If I select not to replace it, what will begin? The car will be limp suddenly in highway? Thank you!

Answers:    This is an interference engine, which ability that if the timing belt breaks the piston will hit the valves. Then you'll be buying a full new engine. The suggestion book I checked recommends shifting at 105,000 miles. Check with a Honda salesperson to confirm. If that's the right number, then you own time time to accumulate the money. But when it's time, do mess around next to.

I would filch the car to another garage for a second assessment first, but you're right about the coup¨¦ suddenly being motionless if the timing belt blows out on you.
