On a 94 ford escort, what can create it to only shut past its sell-by date while your driving and not start spinal column up?

I was essentially just driving down the freeway and it lately turned off on me, it requests to start...its cranking over but it wont fire up and stay on. I replaced the ignition coil and the fuel pump is engaging when you turn the knob over so it isn't the fuel pump, i also changed to fuel filter. My dad thinks the timing belt snapped? What can you guys regard of? thanks for the relief!

Answers:    It could be the timing belt broke. When you crank the engine, does it sound majority or does it sound close to it's spinning too fast. If it sounds too hasty then it would be the timing belt. The well-mannered thing is, of adjectives the Escorts I have see with a snapped timing belt, none finished up with any spout damage.
its call a distributor pick up sensor . or crank sensor the computer uses it to tell the ignition system when to fire
