Is HVLP paint sprayer suitable for automobile painting?

Question:I have read the advantages of HVLP paint sprayer in woodworking magazines but auto painting books/guides only mention traditional high pressure sprayers.

Answers:
Almost all automotive painting is done with an HVLP setup these days. Modern base/clearcoat finishes probably won't work with your old high-pressure rig, in fact. you can't fix a drip in a polyurethane finish.

If you're reading a restoration manual that talks about pressure guns, it's OLD. The only people still using them are a few coots who are putting on lacquer.

Other Answers:
Are you talking about a HVLP house sprayer like a Graco or Titan, etc...etc..., if it's a house sprayer then i'd check with the manafacturer first, some of the chemicals in the paint could destroy the o-rings and might need to rebuild the pump when your done.
