Hello i have the 2000 saturn sl2 and having problem first the service engine lights on and also when im driving or if i do reverse the engine will go dead, the engine sounds like its choking and i took it to autozone and check whats going on,they said probably the cam sensor or timing belt, is this really the cause why my engines sometimes goes dead?and how much and where is the best i can take my car? Please help me whats really going on to my car.
Answer:
the problem could be caused by those to things. Is it an automatic or standard (manual) transmission? if it is an automatic then the problem could be a bad torque converter. also check your spark plugs and your intake system. it could e the mass air flow sensor or another sensor sending the wrong airfuel ratio to your engine resulting in a loss of power to the point your engine stalls out under a load. it could really be a number of things my suggestion is to take it to a local shop or a saturn dealer if you can afford it.
The sensors are finicky little creatures. Yes the sensors can make the engine shut down if they dont tell the engine to squirt fuel or initialize a spark. You can probably change them yourself with little effort.
First, Auto-zone is not an auto technician.
take it to an auto shop with ASE certified techs to check it out. The causes of your problem are numerous.
Saturns don't have a Cam Sensor. They do have a Crank Shaft Position Sensor... which will usually cause you problems with your Saturn when the car is "warm". If it drive fine cold and acts up when it's warm, then this is your problem. Here is a link to a previous answer I provided on the Crankshaft Position Sensor:

If it's the timing chain on your Saturn, your engine will sound like a diesel engine. It would probably mean you ran the car low on oil at some point and killed the chain. But I doubt this is your problem.
If your Autozone guy got OBD2 Codes P0340 or P0341, he/she would probably tell you it's your cam sensor... but again, there is none. Perhaps go back to Autozone and ask for specific code numbers... then posted it to the saturnfans.com forum for more detailed help. Follow this link and it explains everything:

Good luck.
