It's getting gas and spark but will not start. When I try to start it, it backfires. It sounds lide it wants to start but won't. What causes this and how do I fix it?
Answer:
Better check your timing and the various aspects that contribute to that, including whether you have TDC aligned correctly with your spark timing.
You fix it by correcting the timing. Double check your timing marks and firing order.
first off, are you sure its a 302? Ford did not put a 302 in any truck other than a F150. F250 and 350 s had a 300 inline 6 or 351's. it does sound like timing is off. make sure you have the correct firing order, the 302 had 2 different firing orders. if it is a 302 than somebody put it in. it probably had a 300 in it orginally
If the engine sounds like it's spinning over and fires once or twice each time the engine rolls over, it sounds like you have the distributor 180 degrees out of time. You will have to pull the distributor out. Before you pull it out, pull the distributor cap off and make note of the position of the rotor button. Look and see if it is in line with the number one cylinder wire. If it's not, pull the distributor out. Without turning the distributor turn the shaft until it lines up with the number one wire. Remember that 180 degrees is only 1/2 turn and 360 degrees is one complete rotation. Once you have rotated the shaft and lined up the wire, set the distributor back into the motor. It will only go in at two different spots. The wrong one and the right one. If it won't go in, don't force it. Try several times it insert it. If it still won't go in, pull it back out and repeat the previous. Sometimes it takes several tries to get it to seat. After you get it to seat, remember to check the rotor position and make sure it still lines up right with the # 1 wire. If you are an armature and are not sure which wire is the # 1, trace the wire from the distributor cap to the cylinder. On American made cars and trucks the # 1 cylinder is the one closest to the front. Looking down on the block one side of the motor is closer to the front than the other. Usually on the passengers side on Ford and Chevy. Good luck. I hope this helped.
