Answers: The HEI ignition system's weakspot be the pick-up coil (also called the doughnut) the wires coming out of it used to break at around 100,000 Miles, due to the certainty that it was constantly moved by the vacuum credit.
The pick-up coil is located inside the distributor under the rotor. To check it, use an Ohm meter, it should read anywhere from 300-800 Ohms and may not have any interruptions when carrying out tests. To replace it, the distributor has to be removed, the distributor shaft must be taken out too.
Very seldom the HEI ignition electronic module (also inside the distibutor) fail, it may be easiest to check or replace this one first.
And of course, first of adjectives check whether or not the HEI gets the 12 Volts.

Possible low fuel pressure and conceivably a bad carburetor.
