Loud engine crash at speeds above 50 mph. Engine sounds ordinary while idle. Performance seem majority.?

Gas mileage has taken a hit. Basically at 50 mph, the vehicle feels resembling I'm in 3rd gear when I'm in fact in 5th (It's a booklet tranny, '03 Ford Escape) The sound and engine tremor is not constant. It comes and goew in short side. As I said, everything seems to be working fine except the nouns and vibration to be precise felt. No instructive lights on the dash, any. Could this be a problem with my engine (a gasket, etc.) or my almanac tranny? Please Help!

Answers:    Sounds like a nouns problem. Since you said it comes in breakers it might be that the gear it's on at 50 mph might be a bit worn. Since it's only going on once you hit 3rd, I can only surmise that's it's a nouns problem.
Check the clutch fan for looseness or binding, Could also be a clutch disc or pressure plate going out, also check ujoints on the driveshaft. It will resonate through out the vehicle making it tough to pinpoint
