Answers: Does the vehicle have aluminum wheel?
Was the wheel surrounded by question removed from the vehicle anytime only just (tire rotation, brake inspection, etc...)?
If the answer to both of the above is yes then what happen was a luggage of inadequate running. Several of the lug nuts loosened on their own as they can tend to do (see below) and you ignored it long adequate to break 3 of them and trash the others.
But why?
This can happen beside aluminum wheels and steel lug nuts because the two metals expand and contract at different rates next to changes surrounded by temperature. This can incentive the lug nuts to loose their torque setting and loosen. After having the wheel off for any principle the lug nuts should always be checked again for proper torque after just about 100 miles of driving to ensure proper tightness. At my shop we advise every customer to come put money on and have us do this check. We even brand name them sign a document acknowledging they enjoy been informed of this. Any clothed shop should be doing this because about 3-4 times a year we will see a customer who didn't own them re-checked come back next to exactly the problem you describe, though not always as impossible. That's not a bad out of the roughly 15,000 vehicle a year we service but then even 1 is too several.
these days I would suspect anything could start, lug nuts just don't come loose approaching that in 5 hrs. time.
